Re-Frac Perforation Plugging Technology

SwellFrac Details

Efficient, economical and optimized solution for re-fracturing well prep

Operators are left with few choices when it comes to prepping their well inventory for re-fracturing. This typically involves running a liner or long string to surface. The time to prepare these wells and associated costs can be prohibitive, as well as the current supply chain issues and rising costs of casing. Once these wells have been prepped with a new liner or long string, the frac rates are greatly diminished due to the reduced casing size. This problem is further compounded as operators are then forced to use smaller frac plugs and perforating guns.

Project Description

SwellFrac offers a solution to prep these wells via a surface pumping application to seal off all existing and open perforation tunnels. The patented process involves pumping an aqueous slurry from surface, screening out inside the perforation tunnels. Once done, over pressure is applied while the SwellFrac material swells out forming plugs inside the perforation tunnels. The swelling times in fresh water and BHT >150F are typically a few hours or less. The residual SwellFrac material left in the well bore is cleaned out. The well is now ready for re-frac ops to begin.

Fast Turnaround

SwellFrac’s particle distribution size interlocks inside the perforation tunnel forming a solid plug once swollen. Surface testing up to 10,000PSI differential testing shows ZERO leak off. The remaining plugs inside the perforation tunnels are chemical resistant and able to withstand high BHT’s. When the well is flowed back and now producing hydrocarbons the SwellFrac plugs remain swollen due to the proprietary SAP and osmotic polymers even in the presence of ZERO water.
